What You Need to Know to Prepare for Winter Driving

Driving in the cold winter months is a different experience than driving in normal weather conditions. As we approach the winter season and heavy snowfalls, here are some tips to help you prepare for winter driving:

Have a fully charged battery

The cold winter months are the most important for having a fully charged battery. If your battery is older than 3 years, you may want to consider replacing it to avoid the extreme temperatures from draining it. Also, be sure to check your vehicle’s electrical system for any malfunctions.

Have an emergency kit

Having an emergency kit with some basic items in your car can go a long way in the event of an emergency. Include a flashlight, batteries, thermal blankets, an ice pick, a snow shovel, a screwdriver and any other items you think you may need.

Prep your tires

Without tires, your car isn’t going very far. Be sure to have them properly inflated for the winter season, as under-inflated tires may reduce fuel mileage and reduce traction.

Stay calm if you skid

It’s common to find yourself in a skid during the winter months due to icy roads. To prevent skidding, keep a larger distance than you normally would between your vehicle and other cars. Experts recommend staying calm when your car begins to skid; release your foot from the accelerator until traction returns and you gain control again.

Now that the winter season has arrived, it’s important to be prepared for winter driving. Prepare for the colder weather and extreme snowfalls by giving your vehicle the proper maintenance that it needs and having some essentials, like an emergency kit, available in your car. Most importantly, drive with extra caution and be alert in extreme weather conditions.
